Are you someone who are extremely proud of yourself and love yourself to an extent of condemning everybody around you for apparently not being as great as you are?

If you do, you must know that this is not simply an exaggerated form of self-esteem or pride, but a serious disorder that needs to be controlled.

It might seem laughable that something as simple being too proud of yourself can be anywhere near dangerous and needs any treatment. But this kind of disorder has its own dangerous side that you would never want to get involved with.

Narcissism, sadly, has almost always been confused with just plain ego or simply an exaggerated form of pride. But there is more to it than that. Narcissism can be described as a personality that is extremely self-centered that grows to a level where there is no place for others' priorities and wants in their life.

This psychological disorder has many variations -

Unprincipled narcissist - These kind of narcissist usually show antisocial behavior which includes being exploitative and deceptive.

Amorous narcissist - They are more of the exhibitionist types that show histrionic behavior, meaning, they love attention.

Compensatory narcissist - In this case, the self consciousness comes due to the inferiority complex that the person develops about himself.

There are also several other types like the elitist type, high functional type, gender narcissist type, intellectual cerebral type, acquired situational type and more.

Causes

Usually narcissism develops from a superiority complex that the person develops that further spreads to an excessive love for himself, turning the person extremely self-centered and egotistical.

The compensatory form of narcissism develops due to the impression that the child's parents pose about them that kills the confidence in them and thus they begin to indulge in things that attracts attention.

Treatment

The only way to treat this is by giving a strong counseling or a psycho therapy. Narcissistic people are hard to deal with since they don't accept others' opinions or suggestions. So it becomes almost impossible to bring them out of this stage.

A long term psycho therapy would be the best option where the person is taught to develop empathy for others and appreciate others' thoughts and feelings.

But for some severe conditions, where the patients are seen to be extremely impulsive, a long term hospitalization might be needed.
