Missisippi River bridge collapse in Minneapolis (USA)

The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET). There were 50 to 100 cars on the bridge at the time, according to early estimates. Witnesses described a "dust cloud" as the bridge collapsed. Lt. Amelia Huffman of the Minneapolis Police Department told CNN affiliate KARE it was "not clear at this point what caused the collapse" of the Interstate 35W bridge near University Avenue.

"We have personnel there in the rescue effort," she said. "I have never seen anything remotely like this before." The Department of Homeland Security had no indication that terrorism played a role in the disaster, Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minnesota, told CNN. Shortly after the collapse, a tractor trailer was burning on the bridge.

7 killed in Brigde collaps Minneapolis (USA)

At least seven people were killed and 60 were taken to area hospitals, authorities said. Dr. Joseph Clinton, emergency medical chief at Hennepin County Medical Center, said his hospital treated 28 injured people - including six who were in critical condition. Clinton said at least one of the victims had drowned. The Homeland Security Department also said the collapse did not appear to be terrorism-related. The National Transportation Safety Board planned to send a team of investigators to Minneapolis, NTSB spokesman Ted Lopatkiewicz said. Gov.

Mississippi River bridge passed last inspection (USA)

Minnesota bridge inspectors found no structural flaws last year or the year before in the interstate bridge that collapsed into the Mississippi River in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Gov. Tim Pawlenty said. "They notified us from an engineering standpoint the deck might need to be rehabilitated or replaced in 2020 or beyond, but no immediate or structural problems with the bridge," Pawlenty said at a news conference in Minneapolis.

Highway bridge collapse in California (USA)

OROVILLE, California: A highway overpass that was under construction collapsed, crushing a delivery truck and seriously injuring a construction worker who clung to a steel beam as it tumbled 50 feet (15 meters) to the ground. Firefighters swarmed the FedEx delivery truck to cut its driver from underneath a large steel beam that crushed the hood but missed the cab Tuesday. A second beam landed on the back of the truck.

New Pearl Harbour Memorial Bridge (USA)
The cost of upcoming Interstate 95 improvement projects, including a new Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge and revamped highway interchange, has jumped by half a billion dollars. The state Department of Transportation is requesting approval from the South Central Regional Council of Governments to spend $498 million more on the projects, for a total of $1.36 billion, a 58 percent increase from the original estimate of $859.59 million, according to calculations completed Wednesday by COG's staff. The Quinnipiac River, or Q, bridge, including two projects that have been broken out of the original contract, now is estimated to cost $734.41 million.

35W Bridge Collapse
posted by Erica M at 6:57 PM on August 01, 2007
If you are online to read this and haven't found out yet, you're... well, I don't even know.

The 35W bridge over the Mississippi collapsed today. I found out via Twitter. It happened at approximately 6:00 pm. There are cars in the river. There was a school bus full of kids on the bridge, but the bus didn't actually fall in the water. A whole section of bridge dropped straight down and is sitting just above the water. CNN's running photos that folks downtown have taken from their apartment.

There's been construction work going on on various parts of 35W near downtown for a long time, but I wasn't aware that they were actually working on this bridge.

Phone service is spotty.

We'll update with info as we find it.

See also: our open thread, the Google Map photo of the bridge, and raw footage of the collapse.

UPDATE 8:00 PM: We're tossing info in the comments, so add it if you've got it.

Chuck put up some of KSTP's live coverage on YouTube.

Hennepin County Medical Center press conference: 16 people arrived at HCMC. They're under "alert orange" which means personnel in certain areas are being asked to come in. Not everyone. Folks coming in have multiple cuts and bruises and lots of bleeding. Neck braces. Some unconscious.

All 60 kids on the school bus got off the bus. About 10 have gone to the hospital. About 30-40 are still on the scene and need to be picked up by their parents.

There's a Twins game tonight, so people were heading downtown. An eyewitness report I heard on MPR said southbound traffic was bumper to bumper and moving at about 20mph. That guy watched the bridge fall in front of him and slid backward from the buckling.

Also, there's severe weather on the way. Lightning already spotted in the area.

There was maintenance work ongoing, but none of the heavy duty construction going on.

UPDATE 8:20: More from HCMC: Doctor confirms 16 critical, one death due to drowning. No info on the victim. Video on WCCO showing folks on stretchers with lots of blood on them.

This guy was on a boat on the river and saw the bridge come down. This guy lives right by the bridge and felt his whole apartment shake.

UPDATE 8:35: Here's what that bridge normally looks like. It's the one in the foreground with the steel girders. The river crossing is near downtown Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota.

Here's the Mn/DOT news release about the maintenance work. Traffic was already restricted in that area. This single-lane restriction was not in effect at the time of the collapse.

Nighttime bridge overlay work will require Minnesota Department of Transportation crews to temporarily restrict traffic to a single lane on I-35W.

The northbound lanes of I-35W between I-94 and Highway 36 will be restricted to a single lane from 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, through 5 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 and again from 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, through 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.

Southbound I-35W will be restricted to a single lane from 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 until 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.

The federal organizations have seized all the records relating to the construction of Karachi Northern Bypass, while the movements of the relevant persons involved in the construction of the Bridge have been restrained by placing them on the Exit Control List (ECL).

He said that the directives have been issued to the concerned authorities for ensuring preservation of the evidences relating to the collapsed Bridge and a list of those persons was being prepared, who would be required to appear before the Enquiry Board for recording their testimony.

Lets see what comes out (dknow)

Banned BBC Documentary - Bush Stole 2004 Elections
Posted by octron on 02 Sep 2007 | Tagged as: Documentaries

As posted by Rolling Stone;

Like many Americans, I spent the evening of the 2004 election watching the returns on television and wondering how the exit polls, which predicted an overwhelming victory for John Kerry, had gotten it so wrong. By midnight, the official tallies showed a decisive lead for George Bush — and the next day, lacking enough legal evidence to contest the results, Kerry conceded. Republicans derided anyone who expressed doubts about Bush’s victory as nut cases in ‘’tinfoil hats,'’ while the national media, with few exceptions, did little to question the validity of the election. The Washington Post immediately dismissed allegations of fraud as ‘’conspiracy theories,'’ and The New York Times declared that ‘’there is no evidence of vote theft or errors on a large scale.'’

The evidence boils down to this: The exit polls gave the election to Kerry. Unlike ordinary opinion polls, which have a margin of error of 3%, exit polls have demonstrated over many decades, a margin of error of only 0.3% (except in some from the US Congressional Elections of 2002, where the Republicans were obviously trying out their ballot-rigging methods).
