Shoaib Akhtar was asked to do some fielding and running exercises but was surprisingly not asked to go through any bowling

LAHORE: Interim Chief Selector Wasim Bari on Friday conducted an amazing physical fitness test of fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) where the controversial pacer was not asked to send down even a single delivery.

The test was planned after Shoaib contacted Bari during his meeting with the new selection committee on Friday.

The meeting was summoned to have the input of the new selection body, headed by Iqbal Qasim, for preparing the list of 30 probables for the ICC Champions Trophy and the 15-member team for the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting on July 30.

Under the scorching sun and extreme humid conditions, Shoaib was asked to do some fielding and running exercises for barely 20 minutes but was surprisingly not asked to go through any bowling by the interim selector.

Later, Bari told the mediamen present at the NCA that he himself had not asked Shoaib to bowl and there were some reasons behind it which he did not disclose.

He, however, added that he will be discussing Shoaib's name with the team management before forming the final probables' list for the Champions Trophy.

Since Bari will be leaving for Sri Lanka shortly to discuss the names of the probables with the team management in Colombo, Shoaib, apparently made the abrupt decision to appear for the test on Friday, fearing that his name will not be considered without a physical fitness test.

Earlier, sources said, Mohammad Asif's selection for the Champions Trophy was also discussed at length and all the selectors were of the view that the lanky pacer should be named among the probables despite him serving a one-year ban which ends on Sept 22 which is also the day the Champions Trophy begins.

The PCB intends to ask the ICC to consider Asif's name as he would only play international cricket after the end to his ban.

To assess Asif's physical fitness, a test would be conducted in a similar way as it was done in the case of Shoaib Akhtar, the sources said.

Pakistani students launch legal action over arrests [] July 19, 2009 03:10:27 AM

Janas Khan, one of two Pakistani students released from prison yesterday months after terrorism charges against them were dropped, has told The Independent on Sunday he was "shocked and angry" at his treatment by the UK Government. Lawyers acting for the remaining seven Pakistani students still held in prison have also announced they will launch a legal challenge against the Government this week.

The 26-year-old business student began to cry as he said: "Growing up we heard that the UK was the one place that respected human rights and justice, which is why I wanted to study here. I'm shocked and angry. I am innocent and I still can't believe I was arrested on no evidence."

Sultan Sher was also released from prison yesterday. The two were among 12 students who were arrested in April after the UK's most senior counterterrorism officer was photographed walking into Downing Street carrying highly sensitive documents revealing details of the operation. The details were visible, and a premature police operation against an alleged al-Qa'ida plot ensued. The officer responsible, Scotland Yard's Assistant Commissioner Bob Quick, resigned.

Criminal charges against all the students were dropped in May because of insufficient evidence, but they have been kept locked in high-security prisons under immigration laws. "They never told us what it was that we were supposed to have done," said Mr Khan. His studies were due to finish in September, but the limitations of his parole conditions means it will be impossible to travel from Manchester to meet his tutors in Liverpool.

Legal challenges for the remaining students will now add to the authorities' embarrassment following the bungled terror case. Two lawsuits will contest the legality of the Government's use of secret evidence in their continued imprisonment as well as the lawfulness of the initial arrest.

KARACHI - Torrential monsoon rain in the provincial capital that had started on Friday has so far claimed at least 52 lives, as heavy downpour flooded low-lying parts of the City damaging hundreds of homes and civic infrastructure.
The rainstorm has broken the 30-year record with some areas receiving more than 215 mm of rain. KESC, responsible for supplying electricity to the City and the adjoining region, has remained unable to restoring power supply with many grid stations damaged and transmission lines downed. It is worth mentioning that all most the entire population was without electricity on Sunday night. But the company is saying that it is making all out efforts to ensure power supply to the City.
Talking to The Nation City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal said authorities were trying their best to cope up with the situation and claimed that most localities in the City had been cleaned.
He said arrangements had been made to counter expected happenings after the Met Office forecasted heavy showers. But the rain was heaviest in the last 30 years, straining the available infrastructure and resources, he added.
Efforts were underway to restore traffic and electricity along with pumping the floodwater out of streets and homes, he said.
When contacted, DCO Karachi Javaid M Hanif feared that the death toll in rain related incidents might rise further, as the officials had evacuated the people from the badly affected neighbourhoods.
The district government is claiming that it has prepared a new plan keeping in view heavy rains and issued orders deploying workers on relief activities but no relief work is visible till filing of this report.
Meanwhile, Health Minster Dr Saghir Ahmed has confirmed only 25 deaths, besides 57 injured persons. He said 4 dead bodies were brought to the Qatar Hospital from Orangi Town and its adjacent areas while 9 bodies had been rushed to Civil Hospital Karachi, one to JPMC and 4 bodies were shifted to the Murshad Hospital from Baldia Town.
According to details, in a tragic incident at Ranchor Line, 4 family members were killed when the roof of an adjacent house caved into the house of Badar (45) killing him along with his wife Rani (38) and their children including Athar (5) and Zardaza (7). Similarly, Bushra (27) and her three-year-old son Nasir died as the roof of their house collapsed in Manghopir. In another major incident in Gadap Town, some 11 residents of Lasi Goth drowned in gushing water at Lyari river-bed. Five of them including Nadeem Umar 27, Nadia 17, Rozina 20, Umer Nabi 50 and Javed 28 died while rest of them were rescued.

Amir Khan has been crowned world champion after beating Ukrainian Andreas

Kotelnik

After taking the WBA light-welterweight title at the MEN arena in Manchester Khan said: "It's the best feeling ever."

The victory came just 10 months after he suffered a devastating knockout defeat by unknown Colombian Breidis Prescott.

The 22-year-old from Bolton won the fight with a slick unanimous points victory.

His victory completes an impressive turnaround after his world title dreams appeared to be shattered less than a year ago.

At the same venue in September last year Khan was blown away in less than a minute by heavy underdog Prescott in one of the biggest shocks in British boxing.

But the 2004 Olympic silver medalist now describes that defeat as a turning point in his career, prompting him to switch trainers and throw caution to the wind.

A delighted Khan said afterwards: "It's the best feeling ever. First of all I wanna thank God, thank my mum and dad and thank Freddie Roach for making this happen.

"Without the team I've got it wouldn't have happened.

"I want to thank (promoter) Frank Warren. I'm sure we've got some big fights in the future coming up. The way my career's gone, it's gone brilliant.

"I'm a world champion now, I'm going to have a good break now and enjoy it."

THE LEVELS OF PEOPLE WITH REGARD TO THEIR PRAYER [] July 19, 2009 08:56:45 AM

by Ibn al-Qayyim l-Jawziyya

Excerpted from the book "The Path to Guidance"

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "And mankind, with regard to their performance of prayer are in five levels.

The First: The level of the one who is negligent and wrongs his soul. He is the one who falls short in performing ablution properly, performing the prayer upon its time and within its specified limits, and in fulfilling its essential pillars.

The Second: The one who guards his prayers upon their proper times and within their specified limits, fulfils their essential  pillars and performs his ablution with care. However, his striving is wasted due to whisperings in his prayer so he is taken away by thoughts and ideas.

The Third: The one who guards his prayers within the specified limits, fulfils their essential pillars and strives with himself to repel the whisperings, thoughts and ideas. He is busy struggling against his enemy (Shaitan) so that he does not steal from the prayer. On account of this he is engaged in (both) prayer and jihad.

The Fourth: The one who stands for the prayer, completes and perfects its due rights, its essential pillars, performs it within its specified limits and his heart becomes engrossed in safeguarding its rights and specified limits, so that nothing is wasted from it. His whole concern is directed towards its establishment, its completion and its perfection, as it should be. His heart is immersed in the prayer and in enslavement to his Lord, the Exalted.

The Fifth: The one who stands for the prayer like the one mentioned above. However, on top of this, he has taken and placed his heart in front of his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, looking towards Him with his heart with anticipation, (his heart) filled with His love and His might, as if he sees and witnesses Allah. The whisperings, thoughts and ideas have vanished and the coverings which are between him and his Lord are raised. What is between this person and others with respect to the prayer, is superior and greater than what is between the heavens and the earth. This person is busy with his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, delighted with Him.

The first type will be punished, the second type will be held to account, the third will have his sins and shortcomings expiated, the fourth will be rewarded and the fifth will be close to his Lord, because he will receive the portion of the one who makes his prayer the delight and pleasure of his eye. Whoever makes his prayer the delight and pleasure of his eye, will have the nearness to his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, made the delight and pleasure of his eye in the hereafter. He will also be made a pleasure to the eye in this world since whoever makes Allah the pleasure of his eye in this world, every other eye will become delighted and pleased with him.
